Professor Imraan Valodia, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, recently visited the GDI to give a talk entitled ‘A National Minimum Wage – Addressing inequality in the labour market in South Africa?

In January 2019, South Africa introduced a national minimum wage (NMW). The NMW followed an intense debate about growing levels of inequality, changing patterns of work, gender inequality and growing levels of unemployment. President Ramaphosa appointed a Panel of Experts, chaired by Prof. Imraan Valodia, to assist policymakers to work through the theoretical and empirical arguments for and against NMW policies. This talk will focus on these theoretical and empirical research arguments.
