Global Development Institute Blog

You can now submit an expression of interest for the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships ahead of the deadline of 18th November 2024.

The University of Manchester’s School of Education, Environment and Development (SEED) is keen to support both internal and external applicants.

The fellowships are intended to assist those at an early stage of their career to undertake a significant piece of publishable work.

The position will be held for 3 years on a full-time basis, although The Trust will support requests to extend the role part-time over a longer period for reasons including disability, childcare and health. The fellowships will commence between 1 September 2025 and 1 May 2026.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellows at GDI

We are pleased to have had a number of Leverhulme Early Career Fellows at the Global Development Institute in previous years. Current fellows include Dr Smith Ouma, who began his fellowship looking at Data Justice, land struggles and right to the city in the global North and South in 2023, and Dr Duong T. Khuu, who will join us in the Autumn to investigate Just Conservation in Communist Regimes. We asked her to share her experience of applying in her own words:

“After taking a break from academia, I was unsure about my return to the field. However, during my British Academy Visiting Fellowship at GDI, the tremendous support that I received in shaping my research direction and developing my Leverhulme Fellowship proposal was truly life changing. GDI’s collaborative and supportive environment not only helped me secure the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship it also revived my passion for academic research in a way I hadn’t thought possible.”

How to apply:

Applicants wishing to be based at the Global Development Institute (GDI) must seek a GDI mentor. Please see list of academic staff here and get in touch directly with them to confirm mentoring arrangements. Please note that the Expression of Interest form has to be submitted by the mentor by 18 November 2024.

Topic of study:

The objective is for Fellows to undertake a significant piece of publishable research during the tenure of the award, and the project put forward should therefore not be a reworking or mere extension of the candidate’s doctoral research project.

Applications will be considered in all subject areas except:

  • Studies of disease, illness and disabilities in humans and animals
  • Research that is intended to inform clinical practice or the development of medical applications

The Trust excludes these areas because substantial funding is available from other sources for applied medical research, and the Trust’s priority is to support investigations of a fundamental nature.
